Perplexity is an AI answer engine that searches the web and replies with cited sources, with Pro adding advanced models and deeper research.
- Every answer links to its sources with numbered citations
- Pro lets users switch between GPT, Claude and Gemini models
- Research mode compiles longer multi-source reports
- Discounted Education Pro plan for verified students
- Answer quality depends on what the web search surfaces
- Video generation on Pro is limited
- Less suited to long-form creative writing than general chatbots
Perplexity is an answer engine: instead of returning a list of links, it searches the web, reads the results and writes a direct reply with numbered citations. The company offers a free Standard plan, a Pro subscription for individuals, a Max tier for heavy users and Enterprise plans for organizations.
Pro extends Pro Search, which is applied automatically when a query needs more digging, and gives broader access to Perplexity Research for long, multi-step reports. Subscribers can pick from third-party models such as GPT-5.2, Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Gemini 3.1 Pro, and answers carry ten times as many citations as on the free plan. Pro also raises upload limits, with up to 50 files per project, adds image generation and limited video generation, and includes a monthly allowance for creating files and apps. Verified students can get Education Pro for $10 per month.
Researchers, journalists, analysts and students who need to check where a claim comes from will find the citation-first format the main reason to choose Perplexity over a general chatbot. Being able to switch between models from several vendors is also useful for comparing answers. It is less suited to long creative writing or extended coding sessions, where dedicated assistants offer more control. Because answers are built from live web sources, quality depends on what the search surfaces, so it still pays to open the cited pages on important topics.
