Black Forest Labs, a frontier AI lab, develops FLUX, a model family used both directly and inside many other creative apps, including Adobe Firefly, Krea and Leonardo.Ai. Rather than a consumer subscription service, BFL distributes its models through an API, a browser Playground and downloadable open weights.
The lineup now spans two generations. FLUX.2 comes in [pro], [flex], [max] and smaller [klein] 4B and 9B variants, while FLUX 3 extends the family into a multimodal set: FLUX 3 Image for realistic pictures with text rendering and complex prompts, FLUX 3 Image Klein as a lighter option, FLUX 3 Video for clips up to 20 seconds with optional native audio, and FLUX 3 Action, an open-weights 7B robotics model. Dedicated tools handle outpainting, object erasing and virtual try-on. Open-weight models can be downloaded from Hugging Face and GitHub and run on a company’s own hardware, and BFL lists SOC 2 and ISO 27001 compliance for its hosted service.
FLUX is aimed mainly at developers and product teams that want to embed image generation into their own software, and at technical users who prefer running models locally. Pricing is per generation with no seats or subscriptions, which keeps light usage cheap. Casual creators will find the Playground basic compared with full design apps, and the licensing options, from non-commercial terms to self-hosted and enterprise agreements, need careful reading before commercial deployment.
