Midjourney is an independent research lab whose image generator became a reference point for artistic AI imagery. It started as a Discord bot and now also runs as a full web app, where users write prompts, organize their creations and edit results. Access is subscription-only, with four tiers measured in GPU time.
The default model is V8.2, which became standard in July 2026 and focuses on aesthetics, image quality and Personalization, the feature that tunes outputs toward a user’s own taste. The newer Edit Model replaces the older Omni Reference, Character Reference and Retexture tools and accepts up to four reference images, which helps keep a character or product consistent across shots. Midjourney also ships a video model that animates still images into short clips. Parameters control aspect ratio, stylization and other settings, and annual subscriptions are discounted by 20 percent.
Illustrators, concept artists, art directors and marketers who care about mood and composition tend to prefer Midjourney, because results look polished with relatively short prompts. The Basic plan works for occasional use but includes only about 3.3 hours of fast GPU time, no Relax mode for unlimited slower generations and no Stealth mode, so images created on it are visible in the public gallery. Teams that need private work or high volume will end up on one of the higher tiers, which add more fast hours and private generation.
